  2503 Squadron RAuxAF Regiment
No.2503 (County of Lincoln) Squadron RAuxAF Regiment is based at RAF Waddington.  The Squadron was formed at RAF Scampton in 1979, moving in 1985 to RAF Waddington, where it is now a force sustainment Sqn for the RAF Regiment.

2503 Squadron, the senior of the RAuxAF Regiment Squadrons, was formed at RAF Scampton in 1979 to assist with the ground defence of the station’s Vulcan Bomber Fleet. With the demise of the Vulcan, the Squadron was moved to RAF Waddington, initially with the role of providing ground defence for the station’s proposed Nimrod AEW aircraft.

The decision not to introduce the Nimrod AEW into RAF service resulted in the squadron’s role being changed to that of defending RAF Coningsby and its Tornado aircraft. 2503 Squadron resumed its RAF Waddington ground defence role when the AEW Sentry aircraft arrived on the station However, recognizing the changes to the defence of the nation that the end to the Cold War has brought, the Squadron now has a mission to sustain the Regular RAF Regiment deployed overseas. This mission was implemented when a total of 47 Squadron personnel were operationally deployed along side their regular counterpart during Op-Telic (Gulf War 2).

The Squadron prides itself on its record of achievements both in training and competitions. It was awarded the Robins Trophy in 1986 and won the Strickland Trophy in 1990, 1998,1999 and 2000. It is also the only Auxiliary Squadron to have won the Lloyds Cup and Parachute Regiment Cup shooting in competition against regular Squadrons. In addition, it was one of the first Auxiliary Field Squadrons to enter the Cambrian Patrol and to date it has received one Silver and two Bronze awards.

The Sqn is highly trained in the infantry skills necessary to enable it to defend RAF assets against any potential enemy. This was proven during Operation Telic when Sqn members deployed with the coalition forces to Iraq. The Sqn prides itself on its record of achievement both on operations and training.

We have participated with great success in military skills competitions and have won the Strickland Trophy on four occasions and have been awarded one silver and two bronze medals in the Cambrian Patrol.
