You will be aware that in 2009, we instituted a Christmas Cheer for Deployed Units appeal to, essentially, reduce the strain on in-Theatre transportation at a critical time of year (when families need to send seasonal items to their loved ones) and to make the money spent work more effectively. Although the initiative was widely publicised, I am aware from various Branch Newsletters that some decided to stick with the 'old system' and send parcels. While this is a generous gesture, it ignores the main reason for the appeal and, additionally, wastes money spent on postage which could be better used for the men's benefit. I will be re-issuing the CPeN below in successive weeks, but it would be helpful if you would re-enforce the message to Branches, not least to avoid burdening the in-theatre logistics at a time when families need the effort spent on them.
It is also relevant to note that although we sent some £900 last year, £500 was from Henry Kirk, who has since died. We may struggle to raise a suitable amount this year and it would be appreciated if you would further the appeal where you can. Donations should be made before end-Nov to enable its timely distribution.
CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR DEPLOYED UNITS - UPDATED
As we approach the Christmas period, thoughts are naturally being given as to how best to send some Christmas cheer to the deployed units in Afghanistan. Since the sending of parcels to deployed locations over-burdens the BFPO and in-Theatre transportation (at the expense of family mail), it is requested that any individuals - or RAF Regt Assoc branches - who wish to contribute should send cheques to the Regtl Sec - payable to the RAF Regt Fund - and he will forward the money to the respective units for them to use as appropriate. Given the likely UK postal surge at that time, all such cheques should be sent by end-Nov to ensure that the money can be distributed in good time. RAF Regt Assoc branches are asked to coordinate their contributions where possible to ease the administrative task. For other means of donation, please visit the MOD Website at www.mod-uk. [CPeN 162]
